About This Course
The course covers the role and responsibilities of the Infection Control Link nurse. It provides practical guidance on how to develop the role, deliver training and undertake IC Audit

Who Should Attend?
Any First Level Nurse who is going to undertake the additional responsibilities of the Infection Control Link Nurse. The course is also suitable for Head Housekeepers

Course Objectives
  To Understand the role of the ICLN
  To gain a knowledge of Infection Control Principles and Practice
  To be able to use the knowledge practically in the workplace

Course Overview

Day 1

  Course outline and introduction / welcome
  Role of the ICLP
  History of Infection control
  The nature of Infection
  Introduction to infection control principles and practice
  Setting the scene: IC in the healthcare organisation
  Standard infection control practice – the chain of infection
  Basic principles of medical microbiology

  Standard infection control precautions:
             PPE
             Sharps prevention/management
             Waste / linen management
             Decontamination of environment
             Hand hygiene
             Staff health

  Additional precautions and isolation
  Decontamination of medical devices
  Essential elements of hand hygiene including practical and how to teach this
  Maintaining a clean environment
  Specimen collection

Day 2

  Clinical practice in mental health
  Planning care and assessing risk:
  Group work / presentations relating to clinical practice and managing clients with transmissible infections in the mental health environment

  Managing Infections (including).
             MRSA
             Lice/Scabies
             D & V
             TB
             Influenza/Pneumonia
             Blood borne viral infections
             Asepsis
  Managing an outbreak -roles and responsibilities
  Infection control audit and the role of the ICLP
  Audit tools in use
  Undertaking an infection control audit
  Course evaluation and close
